FDA Warning Regarding Zocor

Core Physicians would like to inform you of a recent FDA (Food and Drug Administration) warning regarding Zocor (Simvistatin).  The FDA is reporting that the highest approved dose (80mg) has been associated with an increased risk of muscle injury (myopathy), especially in patients who have been on the medication for less than 1 year.

Patients who have been on Zocor (Simvistatin) 80mg or the combination drug Vytorin (Ezetimibie/Simvastatin) for less than 1 year should contact their prescribing provider’s office to discuss if any changes are necessary.

Patients who have been on this higher dose for greater than 1 year without symptoms such as muscle pains should not stop taking it and can contact their prescribing provider if they have further questions.

It is also important that patients continue to obtain routine laboratory surveillance tests as recommended by your provider when taking this class of medications.
