Shoulder Joint Resurfacing

Offers New Option for Arthritis Pain Relief

By: Neil Clerk, MD
Orthopedic Surgeon - Orthopedics

As an orthopedic surgeon, I often see younger active patients who are struggling with shoulder pain, inflammation and stiffness associated with arthritis. They may rely on pain medications or joint injections to help alleviate and manage that discomfort but want to find a more lasting solution. These younger individuals might shy away from a total joint replacement as there is a strong likelihood that the implant will wear out and they will need a second surgery in about 15 years. Until recently, their treatment options were limited. A promising new procedure called shoulder joint resurfacing is now offered by a select few orthopedic surgeons.
