Steven Kahan, MD, Urologist at Core Physicians recently traveled to Hue, Vietnam, volunteering with two
organizations. Through International Volunteers in Urology (IVU Med)
, he educated other doctors, consulted on patient cases and conducted surgical procedures at Hue Central Hospital. IVU Med is a Salt Lake City based organization that works to make quality urological care available to people in developing countries. This was Dr. Kahan’s ninth mission trip with them.
Additionally, Dr. Kahan
volunteered for the organization Dress a Girl Around the World
on this trip. He brought with him more than a dozen hand sewn dresses, each with a teddy bear in the pocket, made by sewing members from throughout the United States. During this mission, he made a special trip to the pediatric ward of the hospital to deliver dresses.
“The smiles that were brought to the little girls’ faces were so touching,” said Dr. Kahan. “One girl on the oncology floor was too weak to sit up, but when the dress was placed on her, she lit up!”
The hospital in Hue where Dr. Kahan spent his time has 2,030 beds and serves as the main referral hospital in the central region. Dr. Kahan assisted with general adult urology patient cases. The Hue Central Hospital is also the key practical hospital for the Hue Medical College and University, the primary medical school in the region. Whenever he visits, Dr. Kahan provides some lectures on general urology and medicine to medical students from the university.
