Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is an example of the body’s misplaced immunity. It is a learned response by the immune system that causes rapid physiological changes resulting in itchy eyes and throat, sinus congestion and sneezing. Exposure to an allergen elicits a massive release of antibodies which attach to white body cells (primarily located in the respiratory tract.) When these cells are stimulated, they release a number of chemicals including histamine which produce the allergy symptoms.
