Minimize your body’s reaction to springtime allergens

With spring’s sunshine and flowers comes pollen which for many people signals the onset of allergy season.  Tree pollens are most prevalent in the spring, grass and weed pollens follow in the late spring and summer.  Allergy symptoms such as running nose, sneezing, and watery-itchy eyes, affect a significant segment of the population.

Millions of dollars are spent on medications and allergy shots for the treatment of these seasonal allergies.  While many over-the-counter remedies promise symptomatic relief, oriental medicine addresses the cause of the allergies, treating the whole person, and focuses on balancing the immune system

Hay Fever

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is an example of the body’s misplaced immunity.  It is a learned response by the immune system that causes rapid physiological changes resulting in itchy eyes and throat, sinus congestion and sneezing.  Exposure to an allergen elicits a massive release of antibodies which attach to white body cells (primarily located in the respiratory tract.) When these cells are stimulated, they release a number of chemicals including histamine which produce the allergy symptoms.
